More Power to the Assembly – My Foot
Before I start I feel it is necessary for me to disclose my opinions of devolution – I hate it. Its very name DE-EVOLUTION sounds like we become less human if we choose to have a government that has the same national identity as its citizens. I want independence for the last colony of the English Empire.
It amazes me though that people believe that the national assembly for Wales will be given more power. This is a myth there is no desire for this amongst the Westminster elite to give authority to Cardiff.
Moreover there is no desire from Cardiff to secede from the union, and I know my maths isn’t always great but: no push + no pull = no movement.
So then why if there is no desire to have or to give power am I writing this post – because the assembly is being ‘granted’ more power, well I say granted its been given the power to ask for more power. Nothing will please the English overlord more than to have his subordinate grovel for the smallest scrap of power that they are will to throw away, Another dehumanisation!
Is there any way that Wales will, gain power on a par with Scotland? In my opinion no. Labour have consistently returned the majority of the welsh MPs, so there is no incentive to rubbish safe seats – without which Blair’s majority will be halved in this parliament. The Conservative even thought it would be advantageous for them to let Wales secede they are unwilling to do so. As for Plaid Cymru, I like my nationalists that are willing to say independence rather than self determination within Europe – pathetic.
More power to the assembly what is the point, they wont be given the money to make a Welsh way so will just become an expensive rubber stamp for London policies. Rhodri Morgan may claim that there is clear red water between Cardiff and London, that may be so, but there is a red concrete bridge spanning that water. we have allowed ourselves to become a glorified county of England, Wales is no more autonomous than London itself.
Two Assembly Members Tested Positive for Illegal Substances
-
the really shock peice of news is that no action has been brought against these 'honerable' members of the assembly. i cant help but think that the night clubbers of gwent will get the same reaction as the politicians that govern them when they test positive.
it is more likely that they will either be arrested and questioned or given a fixed penalty notice and forced to prove their innocence at an apeal.
-
the story says that the assembly members picked up the trace amounts after handeling banknotes and using door handles, this seems to hold water i seem to remember some time ago that the reason why kitkat bars stopped using foil was because it had a secondary drugs related use, moreover i seem to remember some story that a high percentage on bank notes were impregnated with illegal substances.
-
but what is the point of having a machine that can detect that they claim it can detect a grain of salt diluted in a swimming pool of water? does that mean that if some one is smoking pot on the next table im going to set it off - most likely, does it mean (and we know how much money we handle on a night out) that im going to receive drugged bank notes at some stage - probably, so whats the point surly every one is going to test posititive - yes. so whats the point of having an expensive peice of kit to tell you that?
-
this subject is annoying me so much that i probably cant do my feelings justice as a try to write a calm and reasoned report for this blog.
-
however, one of the things i believe in the most is equal and unbiased application of the law, seeing assembly members test positive and not having to face any retribution while we all know that (lets be fair) drunken clubbers will be targeted and victimised for probably having the same amount or less "contamination" on them, just makes me enraged.
-
so much so i think ive annoyed peter black (
www.peterblack.blogspot.com) who is assembly member for south west region i believe. and who operates a fantasic political blog.
Crisis, What Crisis?
it is still amazing me how everybody is still portraying the defeat of the european constitution as plunging the european union into crisis - i personally believe that it has averted a greater crisis ... and ill tell you why
the european union has for years been locked in a conundrum about how to increase the democratic legitimacy of the union, how to make people believe that they have controll over decision making at european level. now the leaders of the european union have been gifted this opportunity to advertise the EU as a democratic institution, they have been gifted the chance to say that the people of europe have decided about the direction that they want the EU to persue. but what do they do - hold crisis meetings. IDIOTS!
they have positioned the European Union in direct confrontation with its own citizens, turning a hugely profitable situation into a public relations farce! us and them style. removing any possible benefit that they could have encountered and settling in the psyche of the peoples of europe that the unelected commission is despotic enough to want to ignore the popular sovereignty of its citizens and continue with their master plan.
this will just reinforce the division between between the union and the population in europe and perpetuate the feeling of the union not a democratic form of governance, which will increase the animosity already felt towards the union.
Make Poverty History
yes i relinquished and bought a 'fashionable' wristband.
before i go any further to keep up with fashion wasnt my aim.
im becoming increasing enchanted with the cause - not so much as to enter a text lottery but to by a white band - yes its Make Poverty History.
as i said it wasnt so much as a fashion item but a political statement dubbly so since it was bilingual (english and welsh) which as you may attain from my blogging name means it carries bonus points.
well it would carry bonus points if its wasnt for one thing - i cant get it on, you see to have bilingualism you have to have the cloth one with (dramatic pause) the clasp. it took me about ten minutes to undo the clasp which led me to contort my entire body into positions that even the karma sutra would deem explicit but with various tools i got it open. needless to say i thought twice about putting it on and it currently resides on my desk. but its the thought and the payment that count, right?
theres just one thing that i cant reconcile myself with - the welsh inscription, now even though im a welsh nationalist i was educated in england where wales was deemed an irrelevance and there for was not mentioned - like the drunk uncle that annoys everyone at family doos - in fact it was probably this that shaped my nationalistic beleifs. so needless to say my welsh language skills are minimal but i do know that history in welsh is
hanes so the inscription
rhown
derfyn ar
dlodi doesnt quite seem to say make poverty history - at this stage i would love some one to tell me im wrong (which is something i dont say alot)
if only to put my mind at rest as it mocks me from its corner of my desk.
p.s. if any one is interested in a make poverty history wrist band especially the bilingual version then i got it from here :

Bloggers the new Croniclers?
frist of all please pardon my spelling croniclers doesn't look right but i havent got a dictionary to check it.
it occured to me today, while sitting trough a meeting about the reign of king john, and listening to sources provided by croniclers that bloggers today are providing much the same service. that is to say that they are recording events and opinions on a scale never previously seen in a society - although granted not all blogs falls into this category many are politically based or politically motivated.
its just a shame that blogs are not the easiet thing on the net to find, and more over there is no carbon copy or hard copy of the record that potentially could survive nearly 1000 years. im still dubious about the long gevity of computer storage devices, after all in the last 20 years they've changed so much from tapes - to 5.5inch floppy disc, 3.5inch floppy, cd, minidisc (althought that didnt really catch on its just a matter of time before the latest incarnation of computer storage devices becomes unreadable on the current technology.
im diverging just imaging the comprehensive sources listing popular opinion in a capacity never before seen, just imagin the ramifications for the next generation of history students, bloggs will be the main source of information about anti iraqi war sentiments for instance.
we may not be able to shape the present as much as we would like to think we can, but we are writing the legacy.
A Reminder
i would be interested to know if anyone (apart from myself) was on this blog so if you would be so kind as to just leave a comment so i could do a head count i would be greatly appreciative.
many thanks
How Democratic Are Democracies?
just a ponderous thought which errupted when i was thinking about the dissertation subject that i wanted to do (>democracy and democratisation, am now doing EU which is ironic in its own little way i suppose) and just after reading this
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4073864.stm bbc news story
what is the point of having democratically elected officials when they are controlled through three lines whips and other devices by the party leadership, we are no better than china where they get to choose which member of the communist party they want to represent them
doesn't sound too dramatic though or out of place we all know that the backbenchers support the government - its logical, but when you look closely do they have a realistic choice not to support the party leadership? and if the party leadership is controlling the democratically elected representatives who's controlling the party leaderships bernie ecclestone? him or some equally rich individual in big business or businesses them selves
and who controlls the businesses - shareholders and who controls them? no i cant think of anyone further along the chain either
so whats the point of having democracy if were only electing a local face for a national dictatorship.
its time we democratised the economic sphere, since they have undue influence in the political sphere
its time to end three line whips and all controll (bar that of control exercised by the constituents) over democratically elected representatives
And So The Tred Mill Continues
most people who know me will understand the title, its how i normally describe university work - you have to run to stand still, and no matter how hard you try, how far you go, there is still road in front of you waiting to be tred.
well hear i am starting level three work before i've even had level two summer holiday. chasing lecturers for information and guidence fighting other students using the book request function in the library - a battle im afraid to say im loosing, but what can you do.
and in addition to me being stuck inside reading books about king john it is possible the sunnyest (if that is in fact a word) day in swansea this year, my girl friend has left for home, and i collapsed out of bed this morning whacking my head on my chair.
i'll explain that last point - we all know how you can sleep awkwardly so your limbs are deprived of blood well i happened to do it to both of my legs (only hours after telling the g.f. that it never happened to me - typical) so when the alarm went off and i jumped up to switch it off, the legs didnt support the body the toes ten different ways from sunday as i collapsed on the floor in a heap with my head hitting the chair (luckly its a padded chair) needless to say i remained in there for quite some time.
dont really have anything else to say so bye.
Typical
why is it when you finally get the opportunity to go and do something active, is the exact same moment when the storm clouds begin to have a convention right above you.
i've just come back from a walk along the front - i live in swansea (of the wales variety) so its logical nice sunny day so i decided that i would close my laptop and go and take some photos of sunny swansea to show a friend - evidently the trap was sprung - i fell for it swansea - nice sunny day, i should have known better.
for all those people who have no appreciation of what i mean let me put it this way in swansea a daily weather forcast is little use, we're a seaside town where the number of coats per person is probably about five. there stuffed in every crevice of your life ... in the boot of the car ... in your rucksac ... anyway you never leave the house without a coat!!!
so out i went in my jumper still halfway across town still reasonably sunny, black clouds over there but it was of little concern then at the point of no return (equal distance ahead to behind you) que the fog rolling in the black clouds decending it was like mordor breathed again managed to get back to uni (ok i admit it im a student - im so ashamed) before it rained, well i would have if it had any intention of raining as soon as i had one foot on campus - and i aint exagerating, the clouds separated and blue skys reigned supreme.
argh..
An Orwellian Thought
maybe its just me being in conspiracy theory mode but i cant help but think about the NO2ID campaign and how easy it would be for a state when creating a contrivercial policy to set up an online campaign against it, this would automatically lead the most vocal and most active to register the details only to be greeted by the heavy's or secret police in terms of the state. easy way to round up dissidents as we all apparetly are now, nice and simple.
i have often wondered why the police dont use a similar sort of tactic when it comes to internet peadophillia, create a website get every one who wants access to enter credit card details and bob's-your-uncle one highly screwed pervert. i wonder if that would be legal?
Starting
right, im going to start this blog now (for the umpteenth time) and i am determined to post something regular like. however, since im about the leave university for the summer i can rest assured that this will not be a daily contribution.
anyway here goes if anyone is reading this please leave a comment otherwise ill get disheartened and not bother again.
